The tax depends on the system price of the item but there is no official formula to calculate how much it is. You can estimate how much the tax is after a while of getting used to it.
You can check the trade tax of an item(s) by checking it in the Auction for 2hr listing. If I remember correctly that was exactly the same cost as trading with someone although it's been a while as I now do most trades via the exchange.
