... I circled the altar three times. No slits, no panels, no visible runeboards. Only the smooth, cold surface and the soaring Cube, mockingly unreachable. I tried everything: loudly speaking ancient warrior oaths I've found in manuscripts; putting all of my relics - amulets carried from the deeps - to the altar... I even cut my finger against the edge of the armor and let a drop of blood fall on it. All for naught. The Cube kept up its unhurried, eternal rotation, completely oblivious to all my efforts. I felt the bitter bile of disappointment rise in my throat. I sat almost until the dawn before it, gazing at its sides. I was almost seeing the power concealed within it, felt its taste, tart and metallic, on my tongue. But it was closed to me. Like a chest with no key...
